Famous Artist: Rembrandt Van Rijn

This week I’m sharing the great works of Rembrandt. There is a simple beauty to his works that I think you’ll find to be inspiring.

Rembrandt van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, (Dutch Republic) Netherlands. His father was a miller and he was the 9th child in a large family. His father ensured that he received a good education. He painted during the Baroque period in what was known as the Dutch Golden Age. In his lifetime he painted more a thousand works of art.

Storm on the Sea of Galilee was painted in 1633. It is a scene depicting  the miracle of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, as told in Mark chapter 4 of the Bible. The most recent known location for this painting was in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston, Massachusetts, United States, prior to being stolen in 1990. To date the painting has not been recovered.

Girl at a Window painted in 1645. The girl’s identity is unknown. The piece is an oil on canvas painting and is considered to be a cross between portraiture and the realism genre of the time period. Rembrandt often applied his paint with palette knifes as well as his fingers.

Portrait of an Old Man, painted in 1632 is an oil on oak painting. For an up-close view of this painting, visit the Harvard collection and use the zoom function. You can see a great amount of detail and fine work in the minute details.

The Adoration of the Shepherds was painted in 1646. Rembrandt is credited with two similar works with this title, though some say this version was painted by a student, who studied the first by the famous artist. It is based upon the passage of scripture found in Luke 2 detailing the visit of the shepherds following the birth of Jesus.
