In this video, I give a simplified explanation of value. Value is what gives depth to a painting and it’s often the thing that beginner artists are missing when they feel like their painting is “flat”.
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. You can change the value of any hue by adding white (tinting) or adding black (shading). Having at least 3 values in a subject will help your painting look more believable and I especially love doing this when painting flowers.
