Let’s Watch Our Words
Just the other day, I was required to go into an office in town to pay a bill and was reminded how important it is that we watch our words. It was your normal, everyday office with cubicles, desks, and computers. However, there was also something out of the norm posted all over the place in this office. Posters, printouts, pins, cups, wooden signs, and more were shouting sarcasm and negativity at me. I read things like…
Can I retire now?
Hand me the coffee and walk away slowly.
Don’t even go there today!
While I stood there waiting and reading, I started feeling unwelcomed and uncomfortable. These people had not said one word to me with their mouths, but the writing on the walls said it all. I knew their attitude toward their job by the words they were displaying everywhere.
Have you ever thought about how powerful words really are? We use them to transfer thoughts and ideas from our minds into the minds of others. Just think about all the Pinterest boards full of graphics with powerful words. They make us feel strong or creative. They help us when we are sad. They can send us back in time to our childhood. Why do you think crafters with hand lettered signs businesses are booming right now? Words are powerful!
God uses words, too. His Word, the Bible, transfers His thoughts to our minds. Isn’t that amazing!? The Bible has a lot to say about words. Here are just a few verses.
Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
Job 4:4 “Your words have helped the tottering to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees.”
Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Proverbs 15:4 “A soothing tongue is a tree of life, But perversion in it crushes the spirit.”
I want to encourage you to watch your words. Not just those that we say with our mouths, but also those we type, think, or allow into our minds from other sources like books, music, or social media.
This little trip to this office really made me think. Our words can be used to build up or tear down, and I want to be sure that I say and allow words that lift up.
Let’s watch our words when…
…on social media
..speaking to your family members
…speaking to ourselves
…typing a text
…choosing entertainment
Have you ever thought about the power of words?
Have a great day!
