How Do I Paint More Loosely? From Real to Impressionistic

This is harder than it might seem. Painting in a messy, painterly, impressionistic, loose style doesn’t come naturally for most people.

“How do I loosen up my paintings?” is a question that I get asked often.

As a self-taught artist, I began painting this way out of lack of patience. I don’t enjoy painting all the little details and allowed myself to just paint what I call a “blurred view” of the subject.

I talk about this idea of painting a blurred view combined with a few other tips in the video below. I hope it helps you to loosen up and enjoying painting even more!

Here are my tips on going from real to impressionistic.

P.S.
I also created a new podcast episode on this and share a little more about this topic. You can listen here.

I have always tried to be a very detailed, precise, perfect painter. After years of trying, I long for a looser, more relaxed style. Decided this after doing your exercise of, finding your style”. This video really helped and encouraged me. Thanks again. We’ll give it a try!
