This canvas was very heavily textured, and I wanted to reuse it to create a landscape. To smooth out the deep lines of texture, I used matte gel medium and a palette knife. Layering the gel on thickly like cake icing made a resurfaced canvas that was ready to paint on once again.
It took 24 hours for the gel medium to dry completely. After it dried, I created a new painting on top of the old one. You can see the new texture I created with the gel medium showing up in the sky.
The old painting became a new landscape and a new tutorial that I created for my Creative Community members. Recycling and reusing canvases can be very helpful if you like to practice on canvas but don’t want to feel like you are wasting them. Hope this was helpful!
