Nature Study: Birds

nature study birds

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. (Mat 10:29-31)

We did some bird watching today. We saw the nest in the photo above, bluebirds, house finches, grackles, a mourning dove, robins, and what we think was a crane.

Birds are one of my favorite creatures, and I could sit and watch them all day. However, my kids needed some help to keep their minds on what we were doing.

We used a printable worksheet from Homeschool Creations that helped them observe and answer questions. You can see the printables here: HOMESCHOOL CREATIONS BIRD STUDY PRINTABLES  I just printed out one sheet for each child. I used the more generic one in the “What I learned about this bird” pages. There are several great printables in this pack, and they are free to use! There are so many great homeschool moms out there that share, and I’m very thankful for them all!

We also used the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds website to learn more about what we saw. I love the sounds section on this site. When I was planning this study, I sat at my computer for a while clicking on the bird calls for fun. If you want to hear something very creepy….listen to the turkey buzzard’s call. Wow!! Okay….Here’s that link: All About Birds

The All About Birds site also has several live nest cams available to watch. They are soooo cool! You need to see them no matter what your age may be! Here’s that link: NEST CAMS

The kids chose the grackle and the robin and filled out their worksheets. We sat and listened for a while and watched them fly and tweet and fight a little bit, too.

When you take the time to really sit and watch, nature is amazing, and God’s creation is so beautiful!

Are you a bird watcher? Do you have any favorite links about birding to share?
